First Impressions of the MacBook Pro 2020

Over the course of the past year my Samsung laptop (Irwin, because I’m a weirdo who names inanimate objects) has been acting sketchy. Most likely because I have spent eight years overloading it with so much more than it could handle. A notorious trait of mine.

Since last summer I’d been having to bend the cord at awkward angles to keep it charging and even then, the laptop would disform the connector and overtime reject it. Like, actually force it back out; like a baby rejecting strained peas.

For the last year I’d been trying to decide on a new laptop to purchase. A year, because I apparently love to overcomplicate everything and of course, like most things, I eventually settled on my initial first choice.

I had been reluctant to purchase a Mac at first, because I’m highly aware that they’re overpriced. I was and am not a fan of how many other little parts you need to buy in order for it to accomplish the tasks you want it to, like a USB connector or a CD-ROM. You’re also paying a lot more and receiving less storage than other laptops that can basically do all the same things at a lesser price.

However, I promised sixteen-year-old me a long time ago that I would one day buy myself a Mac computer and everyone I talked with over my dilemma seemed to: 1. Own a Mac and 2. Have good things to say about it. I’ve had the MacBook Pro 2020 for all of 3 weeks now and here is what I’m liking so far:

  • I love the slick look of Apple products. If other brands of laptops could simply step up their game in the appearance department, I think the competition would intensify tend-fold. The design is simplistic and somehow feels more productive that way.

  • I was set on purchasing a smaller laptop that would be easy to lug from home to work and back again. Maybe one day even to a coffee shop, because I have dreams of being one of those writer types. The MacBook Pro is 13” and light, which makes all the difference when bringing it anywhere. It’s something I feel like I can bring places outside my house, unlike my other two previous laptops.

  • My laptop came with “free” AirPods, which I don’t think I ever would have bought on my own, but am nevertheless enjoying now. That said, I’m thankful that my MacBook still has a headphones jack. If only my iPhone still did as well.

  • I read quite a few reviews on the MacBook and majority didn’t seem to appreciate or even talk about the touch bar at the top of the keyboard. I’m obsessed with it when I’m working in Microsoft Word, or wanting to adjust the volume on Spotify. I don’t know why I find it so magical to tap on the little highlight or italicize icons so much, but I am pro touch bar.

  • The “clicky” keyboard. You’re either all for that “clacky” sound keyboards make or against it. I am the first. I appreciate how it feels to type on the MacBook’s keyboard and how it sounds. It’s by no means obnoxiously loud. It creates just enough sound for me to feel like I’ve got my life together when I’m typing.

  • I like how much easier it is to upload photos using Airdrop. Something I probably could have done before with my iPhone and Samsung laptop, but never thought to. Either way I’m doing it now and I’m liking the option.

  • I haven’t dabbled with any of the software yet, but I have heard that Mac products are one of the best for any kind of photo or video editing. As something who enjoys editing video footage on the rare occasion, I am excited to give it a whirl.

  • The battery life. Every laptop starts off with pretty decent battery life, so this pro isn’t that unique and I suspect the battery charge will wither significantly and quickly, but for now I’m going to enjoy the fact that I don’t have to sit by an outlet anytime I want to get a bit of work done. Blogging whilst slouched on my couch like a slob has never felt so grand.

  • The sheer fact that the product is something new to explore. I have used Apple products before, but finally having my own MacBook to figure out has been fun thus far. I’m just crossing my fingers that my love for it remains over time.

So far so good. Now I just need to come up with a name for this new laptop of mine…

Macky Mac?

The Marky Mark of laptops.

Ha!

I’ll let myself out.
